Anne Mallinder 1895 -1970 was a daughter of Joseph and Hannah and sister of my grand father. I only became aware of Annes's existence on 21st November 2014 when her grand daughter Patricia Nixon contacted me on behalf of her mother Dorothy Maureen Grant who was interested in researching her family tree. I will let Trish's words from her original email, reproduced below in red text, speak for themselves. The text in green brackets are my thoughts on Trish's original email.
My Grandmother Ann Wood (nee Mallinder) (1895 – 1970) (married to Leonard Wood 1925) often spoke to my mother of her brother Tom at Chesterfield who had a grocers shop (that "Tom" is my grand father 1886-1943), and another brother Louis (my father spoke of his Uncle Louis). We have an old photo of my grandmother stood outside the shop door, and a letter from Tom (that Tom is my grand father's son called "Tom", my father's brother so my Uncle Tom) to my grandmother telling her of a death (the death of my grandmother Alice Mallinder).
In your listing of children for Joseph Mallinder (1853 1915) I notice it doesn’t state Ann Mallinder 1895 as one of his daughters (because there was no record of Ann in the 1901 or 1911 census listings for the Joseph Mallinder 1853-1915 family unit), it seems too much of a coincidence for your family tree not to be part of ours.
There is no doubt that Ann is a family member from her birth certificate. Also, it can be seen from the 1911 census that there are actually 5 family members alive but only four of them are listed being resident the night of the census. Ann was not resident that night in the census listings for the Joseph Mallinder 1853-1915 family unit, she was actually staying with her aunts Ann and Elizabeth.
Ann seems to have grown up within her extended family:
My grandmother was brought up by two spinster aunts which I can only assume was Ann and Elizabeth, and my mother (Dorothy Maureen) has said that my grandmother went to a Catholic school in Hathersage Derbyshire. We do have photos of these aunts and of my grandmother at this time, but why she was brought up by her aunts is not known. (The two aunts were probably Anne and Elizabeth who did not marry and had their own dressmakers business which may explain why she lived with her aunts, to learn a trade.)
Another thing my mum said was that she thought her grandmother or great grandmother was cook to Lord Rugby, and we do have an old photo of a lady in Victorian clothing which she thinks is her grandmother or great grandmother
Ann and her husband Leonard established a grocer shop at Broomhall Street Sheffield. The photo below shows Ann standing outside their shop.
Anne's original birth certificate records he as the daughter of Joseph Mallinder, born 16th October 1895 in the district of Ecclesall Barlow.
Anne married 9th July 1925 to Leonard Wood at St Wilfred's Church, Shoreham Street, Sheffield. An early photo on their honeymoon in 1925, Leonard in uniform and Leo Antony a mess hall photo. Ann and Leonard strolling along with Leo Antony and Maureen on a family day out. A photo including Victor with Maureen and Leo Antony probably on a pier.
Anne and Leonard had three children:
Leo Antony 17.07.26 - 27.10.92. bachelor no children
Dorothy Maureen - married George Grant.
Victor - married Aug 1958 Nancy (nee Brown) Wood - Victor's death 28.11.09) no children.
