The Chesterfield Canal Partnership "works for the preservation, restoration and sustainable development of the Chesterfield Canal - one of England’s earliest and most fascinating navigations". In their proposed redevelopment programme there is identified a bridge that spans the canal called "Mallinder's Bridge". It is my assumption that this was the original name of the bridge accross the canal at this point in Killamarsh. This would also suggest to me that this is the heart of where the Mallinder ancestors dwelled. The original bridge was a typical early stone arch bridge as described by the Partnership but this original bridge was demolished in the 1970’s to make way for a wider road. The map shows the proposed restoration of the Chesterfield Canal through Killamarsh.
The bridge is located on Bridge Street, Killamarsh. The wooden fence is the exact location. As you look at the picture, the canal (puddle) is on the right. The left hand side is solid ground now as the canal is no longer there. Today the bridge spans a puddle! On one side of the bridge there is actually no canal! It is just a busy road. There has been redevelopment of a new bridge that now has no real name. It is now just a road on “Bridge Street”, contains nothing of the previous “Mallinder's Bridge”.
If you look carefully at this image you can see the orignal canal as it meanders through the land scape from left to right.
