John Mallinder 1837-1899

John Mallinder was the son of Martin Mallinder 1803-1847 Paternal Line. John did not follow his father or brothers, Thomas, Joseph and Francis, into the Mallinder Brothers iron foundry business. He was a cooper for many years and then branched into making packing cases. He is also recorded later in his life as being a grocer and beer seller.

  1. In 1841 John was listed as 4 years old. He was recorded as living at Pond Street in Sheffield.

  2. In 1851 John was listed as a cooper, aged 13 living with his mother, brothers and his sister Mary.

  3. In 1861 John was listed as a cooper, aged 23 living with his mother and two brothers (John and Francis).

  4. In 1881 John was listed as married to Rosa and has a family. He is shown as a cooper and packing case maker employing 3 men and 4 boys. Living at 160 Broad Lane.

  5. In 1891 John was listed as 53 years old, a cooper and packing case maker and grocer. He occupies two properties, number 11 and 12 Sitwell Road. The back of number 11 is occupied by someone else. He is also shown as an employer whilst his wife Rosa is an employee in the grocer shop.


Wife

Joseph's wife was Rosa Bacon, born abt. 1840 in Birmingham and died in 1903. Note that the name Sarah Bacon appears on the Mallinder Tiles memorial.


Death

1899 8th April, Sheffield, Yorkshire

The grave is located at St Michael's Roman Catholic Cemetery situated on Rivelin Valley Road. The transcript on John's grave should read Sitwell Road not Letwell Road
