Thomas Mallinder 1759-1821

Above is a map of Killamarsh dated 1892-1896. The Upperthorpe location is where Thomas' abode is recorded on his burial entry below. The only source material for births, deaths and marriages at Killamarsh before 1837 is to be found in the Church of England parish records. Thomas and his ancestors lived their day to day lives in a rural farming community but also in a coal mining area. Thomas observed the beginnings of industrialisation, especially the movement of coal along the Chesterfield Canal through Killamarsh. Just to think, he lived through the time of the American War of Independence!

I acknowledge the information kindly provided by Andy Mallinder to me in May 2014 for much of the content on this page. The burial records of Thomas and Ann, along with their marriage record, provided a deeper insight into my paternal line. Andy also stated he had a copy of Thomas' will, the will identified Thomas was a collier and left all his possessions to his wife Ann. There was no mention of any of his children in his will.

In October 2023 I obtained a copy of Thomas Mallinder's will dated October 18th 1821.

Above is a map of Sheffield in 1771, the world that Thomas knew. In the top right hand corner of the map it states, “A Correct Plan of the Town of Sheffield in the county of York 1771”. Killamarsh at this time was a farming community and only later in the 19th century became a mining town. The Chesterfield Canal was built between 1771 and 1777 and Thomas would have been fully aware of this. This canal was the main transport mechanism for moving coal, stone and grain around.

Birth

Thomas Mallinder was Christened 30 Jan 1759 at Killamarsh in Derbyshire. His father was recorded as William Mallinder. But can we be sure that this is the correct Thomas Mallinder? Based on age analysis and the assumption that he was born in Killamarsh we can be reasonably confident this is the correct Thomas Mallinder. See https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KBFJ-2RD

Marriage

Thomas Mallinder married Ann Steel on 10th January 1780 at Eckington Parish in Derbyshire.

Children

Thomas had five children:

  1. Ann Mallinder, C. 10th March 1782, IGI Batch 7225812, sheet 97, source call 0822042. Ref: Christening, Killamarsh, Killamarsh, Derbyshire, England, Record Office, Matlock; FHL microfilm 2081421

  2. John Mallinder, C. 27th Feb 1788, IGI Batch 7225812, sheet 98, source call 0822042. Ref: Christening, Killamarsh, Killamarsh, Derbyshire, England, Record Office, Matlock; FHL microfilm 2081421. See https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KBFJ-LJZ

  3. William Mallinder, C. 8th Dec 1793, IGI Batch 7225812, sheet 96, source call 0822042. See https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KBFJ-YJT

  4. Thomas Mallinder, C. 3rd Feb 1799, IGI Batch 7225812, sheet 97, source call 0822042. Andy Mallinder Paternal Line. Thomas worked as a miner and died when he was 30. See https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KBFJ-RKC for christening. He married Rebecca Turton in 1821.

  5. Martin Mallinder, C. 23rd Jan 1803, IGI Batch 7225812, sheet 97, source call 0822042 Paternal line. See https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KBFJ-PWP

The IGI Batch number was typically assigned to a parish as part of the LDS data extraction process. The implication is that family members are within the same batch number.

There are two IGI records that are probably part of the "Thos and Ann" grouping; one for a female called "An", C. 10th mar 1782, IGI Batch 7225812, sheet 97, source call 0822042; secondly an IGI record for a male called "John", C. 10th feb 1788, IGI Batch 7225812, sheet 98, source call 0822042. These records state the father as Thomas Mallinder only. It is unlikely that Thomas and Ann did not have children from their marriage in 1780 until child William in 1791. The only other children born to a Thomas during 1780-1791 in Killamarsh were Ann in 1782 and John in 1788. I would guess the child Ann is named after mother and I would guess that the name John is significant.

In search of the Paternal Line

  1. Traditionally, the first born son was named after the father or grandfather. The first son born was called "John", perhaps this has a deeper significance. The second born son is called "William" after Thomas' father. The third born son is called "Thomas" after Thomas (1759-1821) himself.

  2. Thomas Mallinder 1759-1821 birth registry entry records his father as William. It seems Thomas named his second born son William after Thomas' father. This would imply Thomas' third born son Thomas was named after himself. His fourth son Martin (Paternal Line) did not inherit the name of the father or the grandfather.

  3. Martin called his first son Thomas Mallinder 1827-1878 (Paternal Line) after Martin's father Thomas Mallinder 1759-1821.

  4. Martin Mallinder 1803-1847 named his second son Joseph Martin, hence carrying on the "Martin" name.

Wife

Ann Steel (1760-1830)

Ann was probably from the parish of Eckington given her marriage took place there.

Ann Mallinder was buried June 8th age 70 years. At the time of death her abode was Killamarsh.

Death

Thomas Mallinder was buried May 1st 1821 age 62 years. At the time of death his abode was Upperthorpe in the Parish of Killamarsh.
